Last week, members of Ascension’s National English Honor Society had the exciting opportunity to visit some of our school’s elementary students. This visit was a part of a project to promote literacy in younger students by reading to them! Teachers and students had great things to say about the project, and the kids seemed to really enjoy it.
We drove downtown before our lunch period and brought along many books at various reading levels. Participating members of NEHS were divided into groups and were chosen to read for different grade levels and classes. I read for some third and second graders, and it was so much fun! More than just reading to them, NEHS members were able to form relationships with the elementary students and experience a bit of how their days at school go. The children were ecstatic to see high school students and hang out with them for a bit, and we were equally as excited.
A fun detail of our visit was that I and some other students were able to meet with our old teachers! We saw photos of ourselves from when we were in elementary school and reminisced about our times on the downtown campus.
Overall, this trip was very successful. It was wonderful to see the hard work NEHS officers put into choosing books and delegating tasks to society members, and it was even more wonderful to see that hard work pay off when the kids loved the books we brought to them. I hope to participate in this project again in the future!
