The fall play this season is a comedy called Artist Retreat. The story of Artist Retreat follows Mother Dee, a retired dancer, who lives in her parents’ aging home and houses a group of diverse artists for free while they master their crafts. Despite many efforts, the house is in desperate need of professional repairs, but the question remains of how these repairs will be paid for. Mother Dee decides to save the house, she needs to access a family trust left to her by her deceased parents. Sadly, she soon learns funds from this trust can only be accessed if she starts a for-profit business. Now, Mother Dee and her artist rush to start a business or risk losing the house forever.
Each character’s unique personality and eccentric habits make for a memorable comedy full of unexpected bumps in the story. Artists Sally, Triss, Brunk, Bingo, Evelyn, Reef, Hacksaw, and eeee each have their quirks and passions. Sally loves to garden; she runs a farm full of hybrid plants and cares for three giant chickens. Triss, a painter with nervous tendencies, struggles to find her inspiration and connect with the muse to paint the masterpiece of her dreams. Brunk is a weightlifter who has a secret passion for dance. Bingo is a clown magician who talks with a kazoo and struggles to book parties because of the general population’s fear of clowns. Evelyn has been living with Mother Dee the longest and makes pottery. Reef is a yoga instructor with a special zeal for smoothies and a deep-rooted hatred for capitalism. Hacksaw is their local handyman who does not do ‘art’ but tries his best to keep the house in one piece. Finally, eeee (who spells her name with four lowercase ‘e’s) is a young poet with a dark sense of humor. Each of these characters adds to the story differently, making the play a mosaic of passions, fears, and found family any audience member will enjoy.
