Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Premiering on October 11, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, a film version of Taylor Swift’s most recent tour, will be released in theaters on October 13. Are you ready for it? This film is expected to be as captivating as one of Taylor’s live concerts, already having amassed significant attention within the film industry and remarkable success at the box office, even before its release. The concert film is expected to be as enchanting and timeless as one of Taylor’s live performances.
The tour, which commenced in March, spanned six months of breathtaking entertainment. It was recorded during three of the six Los Angeles shows held at the SoFi Stadium in California. These 3 shows, once edited, have become a three-hour movie, featuring a setlist of 44 songs representing the evolution of Taylor’s music across her ten albums, each “era” representing a different aspect of her life–the sad, the beautiful, and the tragic.
Since there were 3 shows recorded, fans have speculated about what surprise songs will be featured in the movie. For those who are unaware, each night of the Eras Tour, Taylor features a pair of two unique songs, not included in the setlist, and plays them acoustic during the concert. At the 3 shows, 6 surprise songs were sung; these songs include “I Can See You” from Speak Now, “Our Song” from Debut, “You Are in Love” from 1989, “Death by a Thousand Cuts” from Lover, as well as “You’re on Your Own, Kid” and “Maroon” from Midnights.
It was able to be produced, released, and promoted amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. This was because, after delicate negotiation, the movie received special approval from the union for meeting the standards they were seeking, allowing production to proceed during the strike. Showing once again Taylor Swift’s ability to compromise for the good of not only her fans, but the hardworking members of the music and movie industries.
The release of this concert film was a mid-August announcement that not only surprised fans but also other film studios. This new competition caused several films that had been set for release on or near October 13 to move their release dates last minute to avoid competition with the highly anticipated film. Among these were The Persian Version, What Happens Later, Dumb Money, Priscilla, The Marsh King’s Daughter, Freelance, and The Exorcist. The new release dates are varied; some companies moved their releases up by a few weeks and others moved them back as far as February of 2024. Call it what you want but this shows just how impactful the new concert-film will be, and how many Swifties are expected to flock to theaters this Friday. This mass demand is evident when record-breaking ticket sales are considered.
The film, much like the tour it documents, received enormous ticket demand, breaking records by making $37 million in its first day of pre-sales, and $26 million within the first three hours. Taylor, being the mastermind she is, has priced tickets for her movie at $19.89, promoting the upcoming re-record of Taylor’s 5th album 1989 (Taylor’s Version), and $13.13 for children, a reference to Taylor’s lucky number, 13. These record-breaking ticket sales point to the dedication of Taylor’s fans, the Swifties, and the overall quality of her well-loved music.
Long story short, fans know all too well that anything with Taylor Swift’s name on it will be an amazing piece of artistry beyond their wildest dreams. Taylor Swift: the Eras Tour is a highly anticipated and extremely successful project that will without a doubt delight fans of Taylor’s music. This eagerly awaited project is poised to leave an indelible mark on both Swifties and the broader entertainment world.
