Games of Acadiana
On August 25, 2001, the first Games of Acadiana was held at the Cajundome. The Games of Acadiana was created by the friends and family of Miles Perret. In 1996 at age eight, he lost his battle with cancer. The success of the first Games of Acadiana allowed Miles Perret Cancer Services to open less than a year later.
One of the most successful and most impactful fundraisers in Louisiana for cancer is the Games of Acadiana. This fundraiser is used to honor and benefits the people that have survived cancer. The date of the event this year is August 20, 2016 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The day begins at 9:00 am with the Cajundome opening its door and having early check in. Then at 10:00 am the opening ceremony begins. The opening ceremony contains a survivor walk, a national anthem, a prayer, and an announcement of sponsors. The survivor walk is when anyone who is a cancer survivor walks in front of everyone and is honored with cheers and a speech. Then after the opening ceremony the games begin and conclude at 4:00 pm.
Ascension Episcopal School is one of many very valuable supporters of this fundraiser. Miles Perret was a student at Ascension. Our school also participates in Change for Miles. Miles Perret Cancer Services goes to schools located around Acadiana and provides bottles to students to donate in extra change. This year Change for Miles raised $52,145.43.
This is a fantastic event for all ages and a great awareness for cancer. Mark your calendars for Games of Acadiana 2016.
