The SMP Campus is holding a paper drive for the Children’s Shelter for Acadiana Youth.  The shelter organization runs three shelters throughout town including one for abused children ages 2-17, another for abused girls ages 12-17, and Maison de Mere which is a home for teenage mothers or pregnant teens.

Ms. Fournet received a call from the representative of the shelter, asking if the could d0 a paper drive because they are running low on paper towels and toilet paper.

“All of these children are being cared for because they don’t have a better home life situation,” said Ms. Fournet.  “And of course I said we would be happy to help with that.”

It is easy for everyone on the SMP campus to get involved in this simple project.  All students and teachers have to do is bring a pack of toilet paper and/or paper towels to school.

There is also going to be an advisory competition along with this paper drive. The advisory that brings the most paper goods will be recognized with an ice cream treat when the drive ends.

The last day to bring the items in is Monday, January 31st.

The AES students are also encouraged to participate in the “King Cake 5K” which also benefits the Acadiana Children’s Shelters.

The event will take place on February 11th.    Students will receive at least two and a half service hours for working the event.

If students are interested in working, they need to contact Ms. Fournet.

“They are looking for student volunteers to man the water stations, serve oranges and bananas to the runners, and serve king cake to the participants and visitors,” said Ms. Fournet.” And for $5 you can eat all the king cake you want, and ,of course, all the money goes to support the children’s shelters.”

The 5k begins at 8 a.m., but student volunteers need to arrive by 7:30.
