Going into junior year, I decided to take Capstone Independent Study as one of my classes for the first semester. For my project, I decided to explore the “why?” for writing, meaning the importance of the process of writing and its production. Diving into this project, I was a little worried because the last time I tried to write something, I had about twenty to thirty pages before it was scrapped entirely.
For the independent study, I wrote a short story and conducted research as to why people choose to write by holding interviews with writers on our faculty and looking up the take on the subject by college sites. When I finished writing the story, I split it up into sections I felt were appropriate and analyzed them and asked myself the question: “Why did I add this?”
After completing my project, I learned that writing is about getting in touch with your emotions and exploring your own creativity as well as the reader’s, and that is why it is important in its process and production. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to study, learn about, and develop something for whatever they have a passion for.
