Over the first couple months of this semester, the junior class read their first book in AP Literature, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. When studying this book, readers will question the morals and motives of both the supposed “protagonist” (Dr. Victor Frankenstein) and the supposed “antagonist” (the creature Dr. Frankenstein created). Over the course of this unit, students made posters to demonstrate the themes as well as the similarities and differences in characterization to portray their understanding of the novel and develop how they perceive the characters and the story as a whole. The brief synopsis of this text was that there is a man who wants to make a scientific breakthrough by bringing a corpse to life, but it does not go according to plan. Later, readers notice that the man is suffering from the consequences of his actions ever since the experiment. It is a great book to read if one wants to discover an author’s underlying messages found in their text that have something to do with society and the world outside the book.
