One of the greatest traditions of the Mardi Gras season has always been king cake. King cake originated in France and was brought over to the United States – specifically New Orleans – in 1870. Here it was Americanized from the almond-filled puff pastry cake like it is in France to the beloved cinnamon ring we know and love. Then, we took it a step further and began to make all different styles and flavors. From the huge donuts that places like Meches offer to the bready king cakes that can be found in many grocery stores across the state and the homemade ones from places like Great Harvest Bread and Twins, everyone has their favorite. On top of that, everyone also has their favorite flavor of king cake ranging from the original cinnamon to cream cheese to blueberry to cookie butter and so much more. Overall, there are a lot of different variations to choose from, and everyone has their own opinion on the best king cake. This is why I decided to ask a handful of students and staff at Ascension what their favorite is, and here are some of their answers:
- Afif
- Twin’s Burgers and Sweets Butter Pecan
- Rouses Market Cookie Butter
- Trey Daly
- Keller’s Bakery Cinnamon Butter
- Mrs. Lobello
- Great Harvest Bread Cinnamon
- Brooke Gil
- Twin’s Burgers and Sweets Cinnamon
- Charlie Bradley
- Meche’s Chocolate
- Annie Boudreaux
- Rouses Market Cinnamon
- Natalya Grant
- Keller’s Cinnamon Butter
- Rouses Market Cinnamon
- Lillie Sheets
- Rouses Market Cinnamon
- Meche’s Chocolate
- Amir
- Rouses Market Barvarian
- Lucia Cinnamon
So, you can see that even within Ascension, there is a huge variety of everyone’s favorite king cake. Personally, I would have to agree with Brooke and say Twins Burgers and Sweet Cinnamon.
