In his first season with the Atlanta Hawks, guard Dyson Daniels has seemingly hit his stride, averaging 13 points per game with 6 steals to go along with it. This is a startling jump from his previous season where he averaged 6 points per game with 1.5 steals. This calls into question whether he simply had a jump in his performance, or if he felt he was being held back in New Orleans. On “The Young Man and the Three,” a podcast held by his former teammate, Trey Murphy, Daniels stated, “I really didn’t enjoy how I played. I don’t think I showed what I could do, I don’t think I was who I was; the player I wanted to be.” This raises questions about whether New Orleans could have had this version of Dyson for themselves, if they had only utilized him right. Dyson has been given a more active role on the Hawks giving him a chance to shine. The blame could fall on Willie Green, the Pelicans head coach, for sticking to what has felt like the same rotation for the last 3 years, never trying to shake things up and give certain players time to shine. But it’s better to focus on the positives, and be happy that Dyson has had a chance to show what he can really do.
