This past week at Ascension, from October 28 to November 1, Red Ribbon Week took place! Red Ribbon Week is hosted and organized by SADD, and it’s during the last week of October. Different activities were implemented each day, promoting good decision making. Posters are hung up all around campus that help steer students away from drugs and alcohol. Students were also allowed to wear red shirts and accessories all week!
On Monday, the members of SADD reported to school early and stood outside of the two parking lots. Anytime a student rolled into school, they stopped them to make sure they had their seatbelts fastened or to see if they were following driving protocols. Many students passed the test and received candy for their good behavior, but the other students, who were on their phones, did not stop at the stop sign, or did not have their seatbelts on, were all announced during the morning updates.
On Tuesday, speakers from the Department of Louisiana Health came and talked to all grades; this was held in the gym. They shared their experiences about drugs, specifically fentanyl, and they warned us about making bad decisions. They preached the importance of making conscious choices and saying no when offered such substances. Students volunteered to devise a plan of what to say when asked, and they demonstrated in front of the school.
On the last day, SADD sold Shirley Temples for $2 and plans to donate the money to a local drug prevention and rehab organization later this year.
