Students and faculty may read the Authored Ascension, but many people have no idea what journalism class is like. I wanted to share what we do in class every day, so maybe you will want to join journalism or have a better understanding of what we do.
When we enter class, Mr. Shome has our assignments written on the board. We share a week-by-week schedule through Blackbaud that allows us to decide on which weeks we want to write an article for the Authored Ascension. This week, my name was written on the board twice because I missed writing my article last week and needed to make up for it. We must write a certain number of articles and senior spotlights each semester, so it is important to stay on top of the writing we have to submit and publish.
There are lots of different things we can choose to write about for our articles. A lot of students like to do 73 Questions, recaps of school events, sports articles, and more. We can choose pretty much any topic to write about for our articles.
We also have deadlines for creating pages in the yearbook. Mr. Shome assigns each of us to design certain pages or to insert photos and write captions. We actually have one of our yearbook deadlines approaching this month, which means a portion of the yearbook for this school year is completed already.
At the beginning of the year, we have to collaborate with everyone in class to decide on a theme, fonts, and colors for the yearbook. This year, we have a really great and collaborative class which helped us to choose everything and start working on the yearbook quickly. We chose one font for titles, one for subtitles, and had another font already selected for captions which we also used last year. We spent a lot of time looking at last year’s yearbook and figuring out what people thought about it. There were certain praises and criticisms we are trying to take note of for this year’s yearbook.
Overall, journalism is a really fun class for anyone who is interested in media or writing. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to join, as it is a relaxed and interesting class.
