Mr. Shome Dasgupta, the finalist for the 2023 United Way of Acadiana Teacher of the Year, is entering his fifth year as an English teacher here at Ascension! He is currently teaching English I, English IV, and Journalism as well as being one of the sponsors of the Creative Writing Club. Over the past years, he has also taught AP Literature and Composition and English III. Mr. Shome says his favorite class to teach is whichever class he is in at the time since what he likes the most about teaching is being present with his students. Mr. Shome’s favorite thing about Ascension is just being a part of the community, for he describes it as one big family. Although he enjoys all of the events that take place here at Ascension, Mr. Shome’s top favorites are the Chili Cook-off, Last Hurrah, and decorating the hallways for homecoming week.
Mr Shome grew up in Lafayette; however, he has also lived in England and Canada. For high school, he graduated from Episcopal School of Acadiana; for college, he graduated from University of Louisiana at Lafayette to obtain his undergraduate degree and then graduated from Antioch University-Los Angeles for his graduate degree. Some fun facts about Mr. Shome are that his favorite book is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, he enjoys movies such as The Dark Knight trilogy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and his favorite foods are wings, gumbo, and boiled crawfish.
