What is art? That is a question that is asked by many. Is it a famous artist’s painting? Or is it photography, pottery, graffiti, or anything else? In my art history class, that is the question we are asking ourselves. What is art? Where do we draw the line on creativity? I have come to the conclusion that art is fluid–ever-changing and evolving. It technically can’t be defined. I would like to think that art has standards, but it doesn’t. What could have taken someone a year versus art that could take five minutes are both the same thing. What, you may ask? Art! Art is the product of human creativity, and creativity is limitless. Many people would like to tell you that art is a formula, but it is not. It is sporadic and messy and not uniform in the slightest. It is not uniform in the same way that humans are not uniform in thought. No one person is the same, so why should the reflections of people be the same? Anyone can do art. It is not something that you have to have good qualifications for. Now, yes, everyone can do art, but not everyone is a great artist, as someone who got into photography later in life. I don’t consider myself a great photographer. I have not always been into that medium of art. I absolutely adore it, but I am still learning. But I’ve been into art my whole life. I’ve done pottery, charcoal, modern, graphite, stippling, watercolors, etc. You name it, I have done it. The funny thing is that I don’t consider myself an artist, just an art lover. I guess in my love of it, I am an artist. We often are the things we don’t consider ourselves to be. Just as what you may not consider to be art is art. You may not consider it as such, but another individual might, and then that makes it art. In conclusion, art is fluid, born from human expression, and is ever-changing.
